Skinny White Woman Reviews...

“Very moving…

I found this book to be deeply moving on an emotional level. It's written with an honesty and openness that I don't see very often. I prefer autobiographies and nonfiction works in general, and this is one of the best I've read. The author openly discusses deep and personal things that most people tend to shy away from sharing in print. Love, sex, addiction, loss, sexual assault, betrayal, self-doubt, recovery, forgiveness, redemption. It's all there, all germane, nothing overwrought or gratuitous. Her experiences with the Native American ceremonies and people were powerful to read. Her accounts of the trials, tribulations and sheer joys of being part of the sacred Sundance ceremony were both intense and inspiring. In reading about all the dark times she writes about throughout the book, I felt inspired that she kept going and never gave up on herself. And with the good times, I could feel a sense of the joy she felt. She communicated those things really well. There is a great deal of intensity here and also a great deal of humor. I laughed a lot while reading this book. In summary, it's a very deep and wide book that had me in tears, in laughter, and at times in suspense. It is a book of unflinching honesty and open emotion. I highly recommend it.”  Robert in AZ

“Highly recommended…

I found this book to be quite interesting and very moving. The author is able to retell her different accounts throughout her journey in an honest and open way, which enables a reader to move to a different level. I think anyone who read's this book can't not help, but be touched and/or inspired. It was amazing to see how the author never gives up throughout this journey and always finds a way back in finding herself. After purchasing this book, I could not put it down. I highly recommend this self-reflective memoir.” Felicia M

“A page turner…

I cannot put this book down! It is definitely a page turner. You won't be sorry if you buy this book... it's an amazing first book by a gifted author! It takes real guts to share so much of one's self. The author bares her soul, yet never asks for pity for the person she used to be. I believe it will touch many hearts and be a gift to those who are confused and struggling with their own lives. It is honest and raw. Ms. Minkowsky's writing style flows and envelops the reader in her sincerity and struggles.” Christine M. Richards

“Inspirational..."

... I absolutely loved this book! It was one of the most inspirational books I've read. I really connected with it. Even though I'm older than Stasia, my life has been similar in so many ways. This book has inspired me to continue searching for my souls journey. I respect and admire all that Stasia went through to be where she's at now. I didn't want this book to end but I hope she continues to write many more inspirational books! Thank you Stasia for this wonderful book!” Rita Milliken

“A truly enjoyable book…

On the front cover of this book, underneath the title and artwork it states `A human journey. An unbreakable spirit.' Don't be fooled. It is both these things, yes, but it's also one hell of a story.

Look, we all know how it goes. The protagonist - utterly beaten down - reaches a breaking point whereupon she must make a decision. Either she continues down the current path, spiraling downward to (what must ultimately be assumed) her death, or faces her insecurities, inadequacies and misdoings, and begins the slow, painful path toward redemption and self-discovery. We've heard it so many times it's become cliché. Minkowsky, however, takes that template, spins it around a few times, tells it some jokes, and spices it up with all sorts of doodles and curls. In short, she makes the story utterly and completely her own, and, somehow, in so doing, makes it imminently accessible to any reader willing to join her in the dance - whether that be a stoned shuffle at a jam band gig or a Native American Sundance ceremony.

Not everyone can identify with a story about alcoholism, addiction and recovery (although those of us who can will certainly appreciate this book, as other reviewers have noted.) Almost everyone, however, can identify with tales of personal demons and a search for physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It is this that Minkowsky does masterfully, weaving a narrative which, on the surface, seems exceptionally far removed from the average person (let's be honest, few among us would allow ourselves to be sealed in a dirt hole in the ground in a search for purpose) but when examined a little deeper, is relevant to us all. We have all sought meaning in our lives, and in describing her own journey, Minkowsky shows us one person's way of doing this. There are many others, but that's not the point. The point is whether or not you attempt the journey. This book explains such a journey in vivid detail with humor, ugliness, sadness and beauty. You may relate to it. You may not. Either way, it's a hell of a story, and if you're lucky, the author's journey might provide you with some insight into what's really important.”  Rewind

“Beautiful…

I just finished the book. I wanted to share my reflections while fresh in my mind. I am overcome with emotion as I put the book down. Sadness that the story is over, curious about so many things since then and now, grateful to see so much of what I have learned paralleled in your story despite very different paths, hopeful that I can continue to stay on my path, grateful that you shared your story, and happy to not feel so alone.

There is so much resonance in recovery that I am sometimes overwhelmed. My own fears and doubts have often caused me to second-guess the path I'm on or wonder if there is a better way. It is difficult sometimes to recognize it is all inside of me trying to get out. I have certainly lived the results of not honoring my authentic self, and I have also seen the result of honoring it. I pray that you are able to continue to walk your walk, inspire and heal others, and maintain a strong positive presence for humanity.

I feel so blessed to have been drawn to your story, and I am presently living the positive results of much of what was reinforced by you.

Thanks so much. Words do not seem to really do justice to my thoughts and feelings, but that's all I have for now.”

“Extremely touching & relative…

This is one of those books you find yourself rescheduling your life around to finish. I even found the narrative seeping into my dreams. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a current or former substance abuse problem; as well as all women, as the author's personal story is extremely relative to growing up in today's society with self-inflicted doubt and depression. The extreme honesty the author writes with allows you to travel along on her journey as if you are part of the experience. We all have our personal demons to battle and Skinny White Woman is a shining example of one of the infinite positive directions we can take our lives in. I look forward to reading more by Minkowsky.”  Viva Carissa Internet Guru and Author

“Thoughtful and open…

I found this to be a touching book that gave insight into one person's struggles with addiction and the long journey back. I thought the writing was easy to understand and approached in such a way that made me keep turning the page. I was touched by the honesty that was shared in the conveying of a very personal story and really bringing it to life. The author delves into touching, personal details of a troubled life that has an enlightened outcome. As a reader, I wanted to keep reading to find out where her life would take her next. The book is an easy, comfortable read and I enjoyed every minute of it! I hope everyone gets a chance to experience this book!” N. Petrin

“Couldn’t put it down…

This book was everything I had hoped it would be and more! I spent many a late night reading because I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the writing style and the cohesiveness of the story. Ms Minkowsky takes us on an autobiographical journey of recovery, self-discovery and spirituality. I was very impressed with her tenacity and the insights into her life. This book is absolutely a must read for anyone who struggles with any type of addiction or who questions their spirituality. The beautiful thing about this book is that it faces some difficult subjects in a positive way and leaves the reader feeling hopeful and enlightened. I highly recommend this book!” AZ Happy Hiker

“I just finished reading this book and I just couldn't put it down until I had finished it. The author shares her spiritual journey in a deep, honest way. I think it should be required reading for anyone struggling with addictions of any kind. It was truly inspiring to follow the author in her journey; I was so moved by her determination to keep doing the "inner work" even with all of the obstacles she met to get there. I think this book will move anyone who is trying to lead a deeper, more meaningful life. I loved this book.” Judy C.
